Fregeanism, sententialism, and scope

چکیده
Among philosophers, Fregeanism and sententialism are widely considered two of the leading theories semantics attitude reports. linguists, these approaches have received little recent sustained discussion. This paper aims to bridge this divide. I present a new formal implementation sententialism, with goal showing that can be developed in sufficient detail concreteness serious competitors which more popular among semanticists. develop modern treatment quantifying for style Heim Kratzer (1998), then show how can—somewhat surprisingly—account “third readings” (Fodor, 1970) on model “Standard Solution” from possible-worlds (von Fintel Heim, 2002). The resulting Fregean/sententialist proposal has distinctive attraction: it treats data related counterfactual attitudes (Ninan, 2008; Yanovich, 2011; Maier, 2015; Blumberg, 2018)—which proven challenging accommodate setting possible worlds semantics—straightforwardly as third readings.

Neo-Fregeanism and Quantifier Variance
Sider argues that, of maximalism and quantifier variance, the latter promises to let us make better sense of neo-Fregeanism. I argue that neo-Fregeans should, and seemingly do, reject quantifier variance. If they must choose between these two options, they should choose maximalism. 1: Introduction Benacerraf’s problem lies at the heart of philosophy of mathematics: the truth of mathematical sta...

Mathematical Platonism is the view that mathematical objects exist. Traditional Pla-tonists believe that a world with no mathematical objects is consistent; subtle Platonists believe that such a world would be inconsistent. The easiest way of getting a handle on traditional Platonism is by imagining a creation myth. On the first day God created light; by the sixth day, she had created a large a...
متن کاملNeo-Fregeanism: An Embarrassment of Riches
Neo-Fregeans argue that substantial mathematics can be derived from a priori abstraction principles, Hume’s Principle connecting numerical identities with one:one correspondences being a prominent example. The embarrassment of riches objection is that there is a plurality of consistent but pairwise inconsistent abstraction principles, thus not all consistent abstractions can be true. This paper...

This paper discusses two notational variance views with respect to indexical singular reference and content: the view that certain forms of Millianism are at bottom notational variants of a Fregean theory of reference, the Fregean Notational Variance Claim; and the view that certain forms of Fregeanism are at bottom notational variants of a direct reference theory, the Millian Notational Varian...

Let A be the mathematical proposition that 3 is a prime number. The challenge for the constructivist is to define the semantic conditions, fulfilment of which allows an attributer to issue a claim to knowing that Lulu knows that A is true. Knowledge claims are called judgements. Hence the task becomes to specify when one may make a judgement that attributes to Lulu the judgement that A is true....
